Avalanche Skills Training course (AST)
The AST Level 1 is an introductory level course, however it is not simply an avalanche awareness course! In fact, by following the CAC curriculum we teach the fundamental skills that will stay with you throughout a long lifetime of safe backcountry fun - and that includes a lot more than just walking around digging pits. In this respect, the AST1 course that we teach is indeed quite involved and you should come expecting more than just an easy awareness session. The course actively teaches you how to plan trips into the backcountry and make consistent and structured risk decisions once you are in avalanche terrain.
We have specifically chosen not to sway from the true AST curriculum to ensure that you get the best possible training, rather than making it easier for us to provide the course by picking and choosing the parts we like. After our AST1 course you can confidently take more training in Canada knowing that you have been introduced to the full set skills that more more advanced training will call upon. The complete AST1 curriculum is detailed here. It is well worth reading before deciding on a course provider.
